Who says summer, says picnic! We know that Montrealers love to gather in the city's most beautiful parks to share a good dinner or a happy hour with their friends! However, organizing a picnic may seem simpler than it is; there are several elements to consider so as not to miss anything! Here is a list of our must-haves when preparing a picnic:
Choose foods that are easy to eat
When you have picnics, no one wants to go through the hassle of using a fork and knife to cut their food. This is why it is important to opt for simple options that transport well and do not require a lot of preparation on-site. Sandwiches, salads, cold pizzas, fresh fruit, cut vegetables, chips, cheeses and cold cuts are all great choices for picnics.
Bring a variety of refreshing drinks
Not all parks have drinking fountains that allow you to refill your reusable water bottle, so bring a cooler with a variety of beverages, such as water, soft drinks, and of course, the OOYA to stay energized! Also, if you plan to drink alcohol, be sure to check local regulations regarding drinking in public spaces to avoid any mishaps.
Don't forget the dishes and utensils
Imagine having brought a nice salad, but in the end, you forgot your fork to eat it… Big disappointment! Dishes and utensils are just as important as the food you bring. Pack plastic or paper plates, cups, disposable cutlery, paper napkins and plastic bags for waste. Also, remember to bring a tablecloth to sit on and to protect the surface on which you are going to picnic!
Choose your day wisely
The weather is the element that has the most influence on the success of your picnic. Check the weather forecast in advance to avoid being surprised by rain in the middle of the afternoon!
Have fun!
You don't just have to think about food. If you want to make the most of the day, bring games, like board games, card games, balls, or even a Frisbee so you can move around and have fun with your friends. Don't forget to bring a speaker so you can listen to your favourite music!
Choose your location carefully
As you probably know, some parks in Montreal have a more festive spirit when the sun goes down. That being said, choose your location carefully to ensure you don't get disturbed by partygoers if you ever want to have a quieter picnic. Also, remember that parks are public spaces that we share with everyone, so be aware of your surroundings!
Here are our top 3 favourite spots to go for a picnic in Montreal:
1. The Lachine Canal
THE best spot to relax! You can sit there for your picnic after a lovely walk along the canal :)
2. Parc Lafontaine (3819 avenue Calixa-Lavallée, Montreal (Quebec) H2L 3A7
Located on the Plateau-Mont-Royal, Parc Lafontaine is the perfect place to relax, play sports or enjoy a picnic with friends!
3. Parc Jarry (205 rue Gary-Carter, Montreal (Quebec) H2R 2V7)
Parc Jarry is a dynamic and lively place, offering a multitude of possibilities in the middle of nature in the heart of Montreal. A real favourite!
Bring warm clothes
The temperature in Montreal is as mixed as a pack of cards; even though it can be 25 degrees at 3 p.m. when the sun goes down, it's often much chillier. So prepare warm clothes in your bag to avoid having to finish your picnic because of the temperature!
Have a nice picnic,
