As you may know, ALS has a profound effect on our OOYA family.
In October 2022, the mother-in-law of one of our cofounders sadly passed away from this neuromuscular disease. For the past two years, we've been involved in ALS awareness and fundraising, raising as many donations as possible to help all ALS sufferers.
What is ALS?
Basically, ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects the nerve cells responsible for controlling voluntary muscle movement. The condition causes degeneration of motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord, leading to muscle weakness, atrophy and progressive paralysis. It is not contagious and mainly affects people aged between 40 and 75. In short, it's like being a prisoner in your own body.
There is currently no cure for ALS. Supportive care and symptomatic treatment are essential to help sufferers manage their symptoms, improve their quality of life and extend their life expectancy.
ALS Month
Every year, the month of June is a month of awareness dedicated to raising funds for ALS research, as well as promoting help and support for people living with the disease.
The main aim of ALS Month is to raise public awareness of this rare disease and encourage solidarity and support for people with ALS and their families. It is also an opportunity to raise funds to support medical research, clinical trials and support services for people suffering from the disease.
By participating in ALS Month, whether by donating, attending events or sharing information on social networks, individuals can help advance research and improve the lives of those affected by ALS.
Our contributions
To celebrate ALS month and support all affected individuals and families, we pledge to donate $1 per online order to the ALS Foundation. It is also possible for everyone to add a donation directly to their order at checkout.
In mid-June, the OOYA team will participate in the annual Lussier Family Walk. We also invite you to participate in the various Walk to End ALS events taking place in person across the province.
We'll also be taking part in the "Ride to Conquer ALS" event in Victoriaville on August 26 and 27. During this event, several teams come together to complete a 100 km bike ride to support the cause and encourage ALS research. An OOYA tent will also be on-site to keep all cyclists energized during the long ride.
This year, our goal is to raise $15,000! Encourage us by donating to the OOYA team by clicking directly on this link: https://www.jedonneenligne.org/slaquebec/campagne/defiroulezpourvaincrelasla/equipes/c0ed1965-fba4-4757-be3b-26c602b55866
Every donation will enable the ALS Society of Quebec to continue to provide welcoming and supportive services to people living with ALS, fund research to find a cure for the disease and raise awareness of the cause.
From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for encouraging our team and helping ALS Quebec pursue its mission, which is SO important.
A huge thank you 🧡💙
